The Employee’s State Insurance (ESI) Scheme, governed by the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Ministry of Labour & Employment, offers socio-economic protection to employees working in various industries. This scheme provides a range of benefits, including medical care, maternity leave, sickness benefits, and more, to both employees and their families. The ESI scheme is funded through contributions from both employers and employees, making it a self-financing scheme. Employers must register their entities under the ESI scheme if they meet the required criteria, which can be done online through the official government portal at www.esic.nic.in.
ESI registration is mandatory for businesses that meet the following criteria:
Registration certificates under the Factories Act and Shops & Establishments Act
Company’s registration documents (MOA, AOA, or partnership deed)
Attendance register, PAN card, and property tax bill
Rent agreement and utility bill (if applicable)
Digital signature of the proprietor/partner/director
List of directors, shareholders, and employees, along with employee details (e.g., name, date of birth, salary, PAN/Aadhar card, bank details)
ESI registration offers several crucial benefits to employees, ensuring financial protection and healthcare support. These benefits cover various aspects of an employee’s well-being, from medical treatment to financial support in case of illness, disability, or maternity.
Free medical treatment for employees and their families at ESIC hospitals.
Paid maternity leave of up to 26 weeks for female employees.
90% of monthly wages for disabled employees.
70% of wages for up to 91 days in case of illness.
